rvss.eel There's nothing groundbreaking about this album, except for the fact that it is built of the finest pieces the black metal genre has to offer, constructing a beast that is more than the sum of its parts, one with the power to crack the ground it rests upon, if it were one to ever rest. Therizo's songs are heavy and dynamic, vocals are deep, but the simple yet perfect black metal guitar melody that punctuates each song is what elevates this to a level above the rest.

This is my #4 album of 2023. Favorite track: Therizo.

xaphanapraxia Darker and more violent than AARA. Relatively straightforward blasting modern black metal, with riffwriting reminiscent of the last two MISÞYRMING albums… except, considering mixing/mastering by S.D. (AVERSIO HUMANITATIS) at Empty Hall Studios, predictably cleaner and thicker and less unhinged or feral in production.

H.L. Heavy hammering or stomping drums, hypnotizing and varied guitar play between icy and piercing, dark rough vocals and clever changes of pace and mood make this album a clear statement for atmospheric and evil black metal. From time to time, when the speed is reduced or rare clean vocals are used the album becomes majestic. "Sigd" or "Vale of the Taubra" are good examples. When lo-fi black metal is one extreme on a scale for massiveness in black metal, "Therizo" presents the other end of it! Favorite track: Therizo.

TAUBRĄ - ‘sorcery’ in Proto-Germanic language – are an Occult Black Metal band formed early 2022 by musicians from Norway/Switzerland to express the union of primal violence, existential unease and mystical otherness which made canonical Black Metal so fascinating.

A Greek New Testament word meaning to reap or harvest, “Therizo” - aided by a meticulously powerful mix and master – propels quintessential Norse sturm und drang through the claustrophobic strata of atmospheric BM into an unholy set of songs, deceptive in their simplicity, compulsive in their brutality.

Centred by the pummelling performances of drummer J. (AARA, THRON) and bassist T. (ex- CHOTZÄ, MALPHAS), the album unfolds in a permanent rush of layered, intertwining riffs and leads from guitarist/composer B. (AARA, MODERN RITES) adorned with the deep, cruel-spirited and distinctly enunciated vocals of R. (ILHALUNG, LEGIONES) imparting occultist lyrics of religion and death.

TAUBRĄ carry forth into the modern era the ancient spirits and spells which possessed the legendary second-wave BM artists of the early/mid '90s in a Magickal journey through chaos, ecstasy, darkness and inner contemplation.

It should not be allowed to release so much great music in such a short timespan. It is though, and behold Aara pulling it off: casually releasing the most majestic trilogy I can recall in the span of three years, each release surpassing its predecessor. Nyx is the crown jewel of the saga, operating at breakneck speed with just a few moments of respite, yet still keeping the focus on the melody and Fluss' impeccable vocals as well as sporting a musical elegance untold. I'm slowly starting to unravel the Swiss black metal scene's secrets. Aara's Triade I: Eos has repeatedly been put on my radar via BMP and Ippo, and rightfully so. Energetic, highly melodic black metal that has more happening in a single song than many artists deliver on whole albums. This had me on the edge of my seat for its entire duration, be it via the almighty (and muscular, what a fitting description!) riffs, the choral and banshee-esque singing or the drumkit assault.
